Is it possible to click on start and end points instead of typing in an address?
Yes. This feature is not turned on by default, but you can use gypsymaps.com/?click and the just click the start and end points.
How do I report a problem with the directions?
Please send feedback. Please include the start address, end address, and a description of the problem.
Gypsymaps could not locate my address, what should I do?
Unfortunately, there is very little I can do because the address lookup service is provided by Google. Try using the nearest cross street. If the address is being mapped in the wrong borough, try typing the address and the borough; e.g. "300 1st Ave, Queens, NY".
Why are there no street level walking directions?
Frankly, I haven't figured out how to implement walking directions correctly. There are a number of problems, such as subway stations that have many exits on different streets. I also find very specific directions can be annoying, because there are many equally fast ways to walk between two points.
How do I report a problem?
Please see the list of known bugs. If you find something not on the list, please use the feedback form.
Will you please implement feature XYZ?
I am open to any suggestions, but my goal is to keep the site as simple as possible. I am presently working on the following:
  • Taxi Fare estimator
  • Walking Directions
  • Point of Interest Database for popular destinations like "The Met"
Is there a Mobile/Blackberry version?
When using a mobile browser, you should automatically be taken to a mobile version of the site. Try it out at http://gypsymaps.com/mobile.php
Is there a way to get directions via SMS (a.k.a. cell phone text messages)?
Unfortunately sending/receiving SMS messages is too expensive to offer as a free service at this time.

Routes

When is Bus routing going to be available?
A couple of weeks after the MTA sends me the locations of the bus stops.
When will the MTA send the bus stop information?
By April 30th, 2007, but hopefully sooner.
Where are the Express Buses?
Gypsymaps.com is designed to work any time of day, and most express buses only run a few times per day.
Are you going to add NJ Buses/Metro North/LIRR/NJT/etc.?
I am continually working to improve gypsymaps.com, but I have to stop somewhere. For now, here are the links: Metro North, New Jersey Transit, LIRR

Linking

How do I email someone the directions?
Just submit the search, and then copy the contents of the address bar into the email.
How do I link from my website to Gypsymaps.com?
I think the best way to explain it is by example:

Let's say you own an Italian resturant located at: 123 E 42nd St, Manhattan, New York.
The simplest way is to link to http://gypsymaps.com/?toaddress=423+W+46nd+St,+Manhattan,+New+York
Basically, all you need to do is add a '?' plus 'toaddress=' plus the address with the spaces replaced by the '+' character.

Another option is to use the GPS coordinate and replace the address with any text you want.
Example: http://gypsymaps.com/?tocoord=40.761272,-73.991486&toaddress=Ristorante+Italiano
Address:

Other Options:
You can all set the zoom by adding '&zoom=15' (Max zoom is 15 and min zoom is 10)
You can set the map type by adding '&maptype=street' (Options are 'subway','bus','street')
Putting it all together gives: http://gypsymaps.com/?tocoord=40.761272,-73.991486&toaddress=Ristorante+Italiano&zoom=15&maptype=street

I followed your directions and they led me to a dark alley where I fell into an open manhole. Can I sue?
No.

Is Gypsymaps.com affiliated with Google/MTA/NYT?
No, but Gypsymaps does use the Google Maps API and other free stuff provided by the nice folks at Google. If you want to add a Google Map to your own website, checkout www.google.com/apis/maps/
I am a Gypsy, and I find the name offensive. Will you take the site down?
I am truly sorry if you are offended, but no. The name is meant to be a play on the term GPS (Global Positioning System).
